Ely State Prison Release Paths

Ely State Prison, commonly shortened to ESP, is operated by the Nevada Department of Corrections. It is not a county jail. A person leaving ESP may be paroled, reach mandatory release, discharge at the end of a sentence, move to residential confinement, or transfer to another NDOC institution. Only some of those events mean institutional custody has ended, and parole still means legal supervision in the community.

The county Sheriff cannot certify the end of an NDOC sentence. White Pine County's courts and Clerk also are not the custodians of the prison's offender record merely because ESP sits near Ely. NDOC records should establish the person's location or inactive status, while Nevada Parole and Probation records address community supervision. A transfer remains state custody and must not be labeled as a release.

Search Ely Prison Release Records

The official NDOC offender search accepts an Offender ID or a first and last name. Use the numeric ID when known because names and aliases can collide. The form supports percent-sign wildcards in name fields. A name result should be checked against the middle name, approximate age, and other non-sensitive details before selecting a record.

1. Enter the NDOC Offender ID when available. Otherwise search first and last name, narrowing broad results as needed.
2. Open the matching individual record and read the agency location or status. An active prison location is current institutional custody.
3. Compare booking, parole, and release information. An old release can be followed by a later commitment.
4. If the record shows parole, use Nevada Parole and Probation for supervision confirmation. If the raw data is not enough, request the official NDOC record.

The search returns only the first 20 matches. Failure to see a person under a common surname is not proof of no record. Narrow both name fields or use the Offender ID. Ely Prison Release Data

NDOC separates demographic, alias, booking, parole, and release downloads. That structure is useful for a known-person inquiry because each file answers a different question. The demographic data includes the current agency or status-like value. The release file contains the strongest retrospective web fields: offender ID, offender booking ID, release date, and release description. The parole file supplies a hearing date and location, which documents a hearing rather than physical release.

Keep the agency's exact wording when reading a release description. One observed official value was spelled “TRANSER TO PAROLE.” It appears to mean transfer to parole, but the record should not be silently rewritten. The individual result and related files must also be reconciled because a past release may precede a new booking.

An end to the correctional status recorded by NDOC.

Mandatory release

A release produced by the sentence and applicable credit rules, not a promise of no supervision.

Residential confinement

A controlled placement outside a prison that is not the same as full discharge.

NDOC booking and sentence data also carry labels such as PED, MPR, PEXD, and RRD. The public portal does not define every abbreviation. Do not expand them by guesswork. Ask Offender Management for an authoritative definition, particularly when a date could affect release planning.

This official facility view anchors the identity of ESP, while release or discharge status must still be read through the statewide NDOC offender and records systems.

Ely Prison Records Contact

The official facility page places ESP about nine miles north of Ely. It gives a physical location, mailing information, and facility phone. Those details are appropriate for prison-specific contact. Offender-record requests go through NDOC's records channels instead of the White Pine County Clerk.

For an official release or discharge record, cite the Offender ID and ask NDOC for the release record, parole or release date, and a sentence computation summary if disclosable. NDOC posts inspection hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Its stated fee information includes black-and-white copies at $0.15 per page, electronic media at cost, specified CD or DVD material at $5, and possible extraordinary-use charges. The agency provides an estimate when expected charges exceed $25 and may require prepayment. Prepared material is held for thirty days, which concerns the request process rather than the life of the offender record.

Note: Give NDOC the offender ID and a narrow date range to reduce mistaken identity and unnecessary record handling.

Ely Prison Parole Status

A parole result means the person has left prison but has not reached an unsupervised end state. The Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners makes release decisions. The Nevada Department of Public Safety, Division of Parole and Probation, handles community supervision. These are separate roles. A hearing or favorable decision is also not the same as the date a person physically left ESP.

The Board's Monthly Parole Board Actions can show decision results, but the page warns that eligibility dates may change and end-of-month hearings may appear in a later report. Use the NDOC release data for the custody exit, then the Division of Parole and Probation for current supervision. A parole hearing date is evidence of a proceeding. It does not by itself prove that parole was granted, that all prerequisites were met, or that the person left prison on that day. Match the Board action with NDOC's release entry and current agency status before stating the outcome.

Ely State Prison History

NDOC says Ely State Prison opened in July 1989 and has a stated capacity of 1,183. The institution lies roughly nine miles north of Ely. Those facts establish that ESP is a major active state prison in White Pine County, yet neither proximity nor county boundaries transfer custody of its offender records to the Sheriff.

Capacity is not a release count and does not show how many people are present on a given day. It describes the facility. Current custody must come from an individual NDOC result, while past release requires the release entry or official record. This separation keeps facility facts from being mistaken for person-level proof.

The active ESP system must also be separated from Ely Conservation Camp. NDOC marks the camp closed. A historical document naming that camp may lead to a current ESP location, another NDOC institution, parole, or an inactive discharge value, but the old camp reference alone reveals none of those outcomes.

Three Ely Custody Systems

White Pine County contains an active county jail, an active state prison, and a closed state conservation camp. All may appear in an “Ely release” inquiry. Their shared place name is the source of confusion, not evidence that they share records.

A county jail transfer into ESP is not community release. Parole from ESP is a state-prison release with supervision, not a White Pine County jail release. A closed-camp assignment is historical. Using the right custodian prevents a geographically plausible but legally wrong answer.

Verify Ely Prison Discharge

Use official records when the raw portal leaves doubt. Search results can change, common names can collide, and a release date may be followed by a later booking. A projected or tentative date is not a promise. Credits, court action, detainers, parole action, and sentence recalculation may alter it. NDOC should define its own date labels in the context of the person's sentence.

For a past event, compare the release date and description with the current inactive or parole status. For present custody, confirm the active agency location. For supervision, contact Parole and Probation. This layered method distinguishes a released or discharged person from someone who simply left ESP for another institution.

State records can also be restricted or corrected. Nevada's public-record framework allows access to nonconfidential material, while security, medical, victim-sensitive, sealed, and other protected fields may be withheld. A focused request for the release event is more useful than a demand for an entire file. Ask the custodian to identify any withheld field and cite the governing authority.
